Summary of the key law and content changes on ComplyWith (update as of 30 October 2019)
What laws have changed recently?
After the flood of law changes in July, things have been relatively quiet on the law change front. We are expecting this to ramp up again as the Government looks to progress legislation before the summer break.
Below are the key changes since our August newsletter:
- More changes to the Residential Tenancies Act came into force on 27 August 2019. Tenancy agreements must include insurance information, and there are new provisions about when tenants are liable for damage and landlords entering premises to test for methamphetamine.
- The Children’s Act requirements continued to come into force. Local authorities had to complete safety checks on their existing core workers by 1 September 2019.
- Changes to electricity information exchange protocols (EIEPs) 1-12 came into force on 1 October 2019.
- New obligations for local authorities and their council-controlled organisations (CCOs) came into effect on 22 October 2019 when the Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Act 2019 came into force. These include changes to the process for adopting and publishing CCO statements of intent.
What’s coming up?
Upcoming law changes include:
- The Privacy Bill is still progressing through Parliament. It is up to the Committee of the whole House stage and is likely to come into force on 1 March 2020.
- In hazardous substance news, location compliance certificates will be required for certain class 6 and 8 substances from 1 December 2019 when regulation 13.38 of the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations comes into force.
- From 17 December 2019, there will be new laws dealing with buildings affected by emergencies. Changes to the Building Act include a new power to require building owners in designated areas to provide information to help determine the risks posed by their buildings.
- The Telecommunications Operators (Commerce Commission Costs) Levy Regulations 2019 will come into force on 31 October 2019, replacing the 2011 regulations.
