It’s 20 years since the first version of ComplyWith was launched and we’ll be celebrating this great milestone throughout 2026.

Over the coming months, we will share more of ComplyWith’s history - covering some of the triumphs and tribulations in the quest to improve legal compliance in Aotearoa New Zealand. 

ComplyWith was founded by Steve Marriott (techy) and David Woodnorth (legal beagle) as a result of discussions with members of a public sector CFOs forum. What began as a side project for Steve and David, within a few years, saw David leave the legal profession to devote himself full-time to working with a steadily growing community of ComplyWith customers and leading the ComplyWith team.  

When asked what the key things are that have enabled ComplyWith to thrive over the years? David is quick to answer: “Great customers and a great team”.

Below is a recent picture of ComplyWith’s first 5 employees, who all still keep in touch and all, except Steve (teal shirt) who retired a while ago, still work for ComplyWith in some capacity or other (Nick Brook (2nd from left) is kindly helping part-time with some tech testing, and Vicky (1st on left) is our ‘Virtual CFO’). 


The ComplyWith team has now grown to more than 20 people, including our 3 part-time law and accounting students and long-term contractors. Below are some of our 2026 team:
