Reads laws, shoots hoops
I love the mix of legal precision and plain-English problem-solving - and that what we do actually helps people make sense of their obligations.
Daniel grew up in Colombia and later moved to New Zealand, where he completed a master’s in International Law and Politics at the University of Canterbury and a PhD at Victoria University of Wellington. Before joining ComplyWith, he worked in a licensing company’s legal team in Bogotá, the Colombian Senate, and as an entertainment lawyer in Colombia’s film and TV industry, before shifting into interdisciplinary research on law and technology. He still secretly dreams of writing a novel one day - ideally fuelled by good coffee.
At ComplyWith, Daniel analyses legislation and turns complex requirements into clear, practical content. He keeps a close eye on Parliament, Government, and regulatory bodies, tracking what’s coming down the pipeline and working out how changes should be reflected in our compliance obligations. His days start with a meticulously organised system for checking possible law changes, followed by lots of reading, thinking, and crafting content with the guidance of our Head of Content.
Outside of work, Daniel is usually reading a detective novel or sci-fi, exploring bookstores, writing, or hunting down great coffee. He enjoys road trips, good conversations, and going to the cinema or brunch with his partner. He’s a social basketball player, a Wellington Saints fan now seeking new basketball friends in Auckland, and - little known fact - a genuinely decent cook.
When he’s not unpacking legislation, Daniel’s on court (the basketball court), watching the game or playing it.
